History and Background of Adelaide Hills Harvest

Adelaide Hills Harvest Team

How Adelaide Hills Harvest Began

In 2018 Robert and Algis embarked on a life changing journey with their sons, to their homelands in the Balkans and Baltics. They wanted to share their rich heritage and give the teens a real taste of the family culture.

On that adventure, Robert and Algis had an awakening – they rediscovered the food of their early years. After that trip couldn’t find anything like the true Balkan recipes in South Australia, so they decided to recreate the flavours under the Adelaide Hills Harvest mother brand.

Robert came to Australia in 1969, as a 4-year-old boy, from Serbia. You could say he started producing naturally cold smoked meats then, as he was immersed in his mothers and fathers’ Serbian food traditions and recipes.

Bessy married Robert in 1988, This union has seen them also become business partners in running the operations. Bessy is actively involved in all aspects of the Adelaide Hills Harvest brand.

Algis, an accomplished and renowned chef in Australia, has his origins from Lithuania. His deep passion for flavoursome food is also rooted in inherited generations of knowledge.

Cultivating raw food to create taste sensations has earned him a notable reputation in the food industry.

After that famous trip, the trio started making sourdough and rye breads which led to smoke meats too. Teaming up with another friend who grows olives, they started cold pressing olives to create oil the way it was traditionally made.

Robert, Bessy and Algis take a wholistic approach to food production and preparation. Together the expertise and experience of this entrepreneurial trio means they transform ideas into viable products, from the farm to the onsite production where they run traditional product trials.

The Adelaide Hills Harvest brand was established in the local Adelaide Hills market for to cater for the new Australian sentiment to slow down and appreciate locally produced and totally natural wholesome food.

Together Robert, Bessy and Algis have developed an enviable reputation for quality specialised produce.

Our Values

Respecting Nature and the Environment

Adelaide Hills Harvest team prefer the ‘small family farm’ philosophy.

They feel the smaller scale farming is the Rolls Royce of food production as it enables producers to keep everything natural – in the truest sense.

This value results in respecting nature and the environment, in turn it’s better for people.

The AHH team pride themselves on only using the best natural and locally sourced and produced raw material.

They buy organically fed free-range heirloom breed Berkshire pigs, not genetically modified or commercially bred breeds.

On their pristine property, Robert and Bessy have a local beekeeper to keep hives and they use the honey from in their products.

As the Adelaide Hills region doesn’t have fruit fly, that plagues much of Australia’s fruit fields, hence, their fruit is not sprayed with herbicides and pesticides. This means all the fruits in their produce and olives are organically grown and local.

The olives they cold press to produce extra virgin olive oils come all come from the one property and are pressed on the property within hours of being picked.

A big part of the AHH brand values is to support local farmers and keep the food miles low.

The Adelaide Hills Harvest philosophy includes practicing a sustainable and environmentally mindful approach to their small batch food manufacturing.

In all aspects of the business Adelaide Hills Harvest trio look for ways to reuse, recycle and reduce. Specifically this will translate in to choosing packaging that will be recyclable and recycled.
